The Three CogAT Batteries Comprehensive Preparation
The CogAT assesses cognitive abilities across three distinct batteries. Our tutors provide targeted preparation for each, ensuring your child is confident and prepared for every section of the test.
Verbal Battery
- Picture and Verbal Analogies
- Sentence Completion
- Verbal Classification
- Word Relationships and Context
- Vocabulary Building Strategies
Why it matters: strong verbal reasoning also supports reading comprehension and vocabulary growth well beyond test day.
Quantitative Battery
- Number Analogies
- Number Puzzles and Equations
- Number Series and Patterns
- Quantitative Reasoning
- Mathematical Logic
Why it matters: this battery does not require classroom math knowledge, so even students who have not covered a topic yet can succeed by spotting the pattern.
Non Verbal Battery
- Figure Matrices
- Paper Folding and Cutting
- Figure Classification
- Spatial Reasoning
- Visual Pattern Recognition
Why it matters: this is often the least familiar battery to kids, since there is no reading or arithmetic involved, just pure visual pattern logic.
Understanding CogAT Levels & Percentile Scores
CogAT reports can look confusing at first glance. Here is a plain language guide to what the numbers mean and which Form Level applies to your child's grade.
What a percentile actually means
A CogAT score is not a percentage of questions answered correctly. It is a percentile rank compared to other students the same age or in the same grade. A score in the 91st percentile means your child performed as well as or better than 91 out of 100 same age or same grade peers, not that they got 91 percent of questions right.
Schools may report an Age Percentile Rank (APR) or a Grade Percentile Rank (GPR). These can differ for a child who is young or old for their grade, so always check which one your district uses before comparing scores.
There is no single national cutoff for gifted programs. Districts commonly set the bar somewhere between the 90th and 98th percentile on the composite score, so confirming your specific district's requirement is always the best first step.
Which Form Level is my child's grade?
| Grade | CogAT Form Level |
|---|---|
| Kindergarten | Level 5/6 |
| Grade 1 | Level 7 |
| Grade 2 | Level 8 |
| Grade 3 | Level 9 |
| Grade 4 | Level 10 |
| Grade 5 | Level 11 |
| Grade 6 | Level 12 |
| Grades 7 to 8 | Level 13/14 |
| Grades 9 to 10 | Level 15/16 |
| Grades 11 to 12 | Level 17/18 |
Some districts test one grade ahead for gifted screening, so double check the exact level your school is using before you begin prep.
Test Your Skills: Try A Real Question
Click on any card below to reveal the answer and learn the exact strategy our expert tutors use to solve it in seconds.
Picture Analogy
Dog is to doghouse as bird is to what?
Correct Answer
Birdhouse
Tutor Strategy: Identify the relationship. A dog lives in a doghouse. Therefore, a bird lives in a birdhouse. Always define the relationship first, in a full sentence, before looking at the answer choices.
Number Series
What number comes next? 2, 4, 8, 16, ...
Correct Answer
32
Tutor Strategy: Look at the relationship between consecutive numbers rather than the numbers themselves. Each number is multiplied by 2 to get the next one, so 16 multiplied by 2 equals 32.
Figure Matrices
If a triangle becomes a pentagon, and a square becomes a hexagon, what does a pentagon become?
Correct Answer
Heptagon
Tutor Strategy: Count the sides in each pair. Triangle (3) to Pentagon (5) adds two sides. Square (4) to Hexagon (6) also adds two sides. Applying the same two-sided rule, Pentagon (5) plus two sides equals a Heptagon (7).

Everything You Need to Know About CogAT Prep
What is the CogAT test?
The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is a K to 12 assessment that measures a student's reasoning abilities in three areas: Verbal, Quantitative, and Non Verbal. It is commonly used for gifted and talented program admissions, private school admissions, and academic placement.
What are the three CogAT batteries?
The CogAT has three batteries: Verbal (picture and verbal analogies, sentence completion, verbal classification), Quantitative (number analogies, number puzzles, number series), and Non Verbal (figure matrices, paper folding, figure classification). Each battery assesses a different type of reasoning ability.
What grade levels take the CogAT?
The CogAT is administered from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Different Form Levels (Levels 5/6 through 17/18) are used for different grade ranges, with question difficulty and format varying by level. We prep for all levels.
How is the CogAT scored?
The CogAT is scored using age based and grade based percentile ranks. Scores are reported for each battery (Verbal, Quantitative, Non Verbal) and as a composite score. Percentile ranks compare your child's performance to other students of the same age or grade.
What counts as a good CogAT score?
CogAT results are reported as percentile ranks from 1 to 99, not a letter grade or pass or fail score. A percentile in the 50s means average performance for a same age or same grade peer group. Most gifted and talented programs set their qualifying cutoff somewhere between the 90th and 98th percentile, and the exact number depends on the school district or private school, so it is worth checking your district's specific threshold rather than assuming a single national cutoff.
Should I prep my child for the CogAT?
The CogAT measures reasoning ability rather than taught content, so there is nothing to memorise the way there is for a spelling test. What preparation can do is make the question formats familiar, teach pacing so a nervous or slow reader is not penalised by time pressure, and reduce test day anxiety. Light, skills based familiarisation helps a child show their true reasoning ability, while heavy drilling on exact question types offers diminishing returns and is not a substitute for a child's underlying reasoning skills.
Is the CogAT the same as an IQ test?
The CogAT is closely related to an IQ test but is not identical. Both measure reasoning ability rather than learned facts, and CogAT scores correlate with IQ scores. However, the CogAT is normed against a student's age or grade peer group specifically for educational placement decisions, and school districts typically treat it as a reasoning or aptitude measure rather than a clinical IQ score.
What is the difference between CogAT and other gifted tests?
The CogAT focuses specifically on cognitive reasoning abilities across three batteries. Other gifted tests like OLSAT and NNAT have different formats and question types. The CogAT is widely used by school districts across the US for gifted program admissions.
Do you offer CogAT prep for Kindergarten students?
Yes. We offer specialised CogAT prep for Kindergarten students (Level 5/6) using engaging, age appropriate methods. Our tutors focus on picture based questions, simple analogies, and basic reasoning skills.
What if the tutor is not the right fit?
Your first session is completely free, so there is no risk. If the match is not perfect, we will find a replacement tutor at no extra cost.
Is the CogAT test timed?
Yes, the CogAT is a timed test. Each battery has a specific time limit. Our tutors teach time management strategies alongside reasoning skills, so students can complete each section with confidence.
Can you help with CogAT test anxiety?
Yes. Our tutors build confidence through familiarisation with question types, practice tests, and positive reinforcement. We help students approach the test with a calm, focused mindset.
