What Is the GEP?
Established by MOE in 1984, the Gifted Education Programme caters to intellectually gifted students who need an enriched, accelerated curriculum beyond the mainstream classroom.
The GEP Screening Test
- Administered to all Primary 3 students at their own schools
- Two papers: English Language and Mathematics
- English covers vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, verbal reasoning
- Mathematics covers problem-solving, pattern recognition, non-routine reasoning
- Roughly the top 10% of scorers advance to Round 2
The GEP Selection Test
- Administered to invited students at designated GEP centres
- Three papers: English, Mathematics, General Ability
- General Ability covers non-verbal and spatial reasoning, pattern completion
- Mathematics requires multi-step reasoning and creative approaches
- Roughly the top 1.5% of the original cohort are offered places
The GEP Curriculum
Selected students transfer to one of nine GEP centres β including Raffles Girls' Primary School, Rosyth School, Nan Hua Primary School, Tao Nan School, and Nanyang Primary School β for enriched English, Mathematics, and Science content, dedicated research and independent study skills, higher teacher-student ratios, and advanced projects and leadership opportunities.
The Competitive Reality
Of roughly 30,000 Primary 3 students who sit the Screening Test each year, fewer than 500 are ultimately offered GEP places.

Why Students Need GEP Preparation
The GEP tests don't assess curriculum knowledge β they detect reasoning ability, cognitive flexibility, and exposure to non-routine problem types.
Unfamiliar Question Types
Non-routine Mathematics and advanced verbal reasoning go well beyond standard Primary 3 worksheets and comprehension exercises.
Time Pressure & Stamina
The Selection Test is long and demanding β managing time and avoiding careless errors under pressure must be practised.
The "Trick Question" Phenomenon
Distractor answers look correct but contain subtle errors β preparation teaches careful reading and verification of reasoning.
Parental Uncertainty
Expert guidance helps parents navigate what the tests involve and how to support their child without creating stress.
The Risk of Over-Preparation
Excessive drilling can hurt performance on novel problems β effective preparation balances skill-building with flexibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the GEP?
An MOE initiative providing an enriched curriculum for intellectually gifted students, identified through a two-round screening and selection process in Primary 3.
When does GEP preparation start?
Most families begin 6β12 months before the Primary 3 Screening Test in August. We assess each child's readiness individually to avoid starting too early or too late.
Does GEP preparation guarantee placement?
No. The tests assess natural reasoning ability β preparation ensures capable students can demonstrate their potential and aren't disadvantaged by unfamiliar formats.
What if my child doesn't qualify for GEP?
Non-selection doesn't mean a child isn't gifted or capable. The skills built through preparation still serve them, and pathways like DSA remain open.
Will preparation stress my child?
We prioritise wellbeing β sessions are engaging and appropriately challenging, with breaks and monitoring for signs of stress throughout.
How do I get started?
Schedule a free 45-minute assessment and trial session. We'll evaluate your child's readiness and design a personalised preparation plan.
