Understanding the SACE Structure
Two stages, two very different jobs — and only one of them counts toward ATAR.
Stage 1
Students build subject foundations and complete the compulsory Personal Learning Plan (PLP) — introducing goal-setting and career planning skills required before Stage 2 study can begin.
Stage 2
The stage that matters most for ATAR. Each subject is assessed through school-based assessment (worth 70% in most subjects) and an external examination or investigation (worth 30%).

ATAR Calculation
ATAR is calculated from a student's best four Tertiary Admissions Subjects (TAS) at Stage 2, plus a scaled contribution from a fifth, moderated by the SACE Board and SATAC.

SACE Merit lists recognise the top-performing students in each Stage 2 subject each year, based on school assessment and external exam performance combined.
