WJEC awards two separate GCSEs in mathematics: Mathematics (C442), which focuses on algebra, geometry and problem-solving, and Mathematics–Numeracy (C440), which covers number, ratio and statistics. Both are full GCSEs, each taken across Foundation and Higher tiers. Many Welsh students take both, which effectively doubles the content to master. Foundation tier awards grades 1 to 5, while Higher tier awards grades 4 to 9. Because WJEC's unitised structure lets students retake units, the tier decision can be revisited unit by unit in some cases.
